Courbet als Assyrer
Im Jahre 1847 reichte Gustav Courbet zum Salon, der großen Jahresausstellung der französischen Kunst, ein Selbstbildnis ein, das erst 1848 unter dem Titel »Le Violoncelliste« angenommen wurde. Er präsentiert sich darin nicht als Maler, sondern als leidend einfühlender Cellist. Den Bogen hält er in der Linken, obwohl er Rechtshänder war. Dass er sich weigert, sein Spiegelbild für das Publikum umzudrehen, so dass es wieder seitenrichtig erscheint, mochte noch als Authentizitätsmerkmal erscheinen.
