Simon Starling

lebt und arbeitet in Kopenhagen und Berlin. Er studierte an der Glasgow School of Art und gehört zu den führenden Künstlern seiner Generation. In seiner multimedialen Arbeit (Film, Installation und Fotografie) beschäftigt er sich u.a. mit der Geschichte von Kunst und Design, mit wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen sowie globalen wirtschaftlichen und ökologischen Fragen. Er vertrat Schottland bei der 50. Biennale di Venezia (2003) und wurde 2005 mit dem Turner Prize für seine Arbeit Shedboatshed ausgezeichnet. Von 2003 bis 2013 lehrte er als Professor für Bildende Kunst an der Städelschule in Frankfurt. Starlings Werke wurden bereits weltweit in Einzelausstellungen gezeigt, u.a. in der Villa Arson in Nizza, im Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel, im Mass MOCA in North Adams, USA, in der Tate Britain in London, in der Stuttgarter Staatsgalerie und am MUMA in Melbourne, und sie sind in international bedeutenden Sammlungen vertreten, u.a. in der Astrup Fearnley Collection; Museet for Moderne Kunst, Oslo; Castello di Rivoli, Turin; Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow; Tate Modern, London; Moderna Museet, Stockholm und dem Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.

Ferhat Taylan

ist Postdoc-Forscher in Philosophie an der Université de Liège im Rahmen des belgischen Fonds für wissenschaftliche Forschung (FNRS). Der Schwerpunkt seiner Forschung liegt auf den modernen Kategorien des Umweltwissens und ihrer Bedeutung in der Sozialpolitik. Für seine Promotion untersuchte er den französischen Begriff des »milieu« sowie dessen Verzweigungen in den Sozial- und Politikwissenschaften, 2018 erschienen bei den Editions de la Sorbonne unter dem Titel Mésopolitique. Connaître, théoriser, gouverner les milieux de vie (1750–1900). Zuletzt ist sein Aufsatz zur historischen Epistemologie erschienen, Concepts et rationalités. Héritages de l'épistémologie historique de Meyerson à Foucault (2018). Taylan hat außerdem Umweltphilosophie an der Nanterre Universität sowie Wissenschaftsforschung an der Sciences Po in Paris gelehrt.

The notion of ecology not only figures centrally in current debates around climate change, but also traverses contemporary discourses in the arts, the humanities, and the social and techno sciences. In its present reformulation it refers to the multi-layered and multi-dimensional nexus of reciprocities between living processes, technological and media practices, i.e. to the complex relations of human and nonhuman agents. The book Hybrid Ecologies understands ecology as an ambivalent notion, whose multivalence opens up new fields of action and yet, thanks precisely to this openness and vast applicability, at the same time raises questions not least concerning its genealogy. The interdisciplinary contributions seek to explore the political and social effects that a rethinking of community in ecological and thus also in biopolitical terms may provoke, and which consequences the contemporary notion of ecology might entail for artistic and design practices in particular. The present publication is the result of the fifth annual program of the cx centre for interdisciplinary studies, which was conceived in cooperation with the Chair of Philosophy | Aesthetic Theory at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
